Reflection of Voluntary experience in children’s home.

Elio Rash

National  Chengchi University

It was an early morning we were leaving Taipei and heading for Kaoshiung county. The sun was out and it was a bit humid and Rebecca and her dad drove us to the bus station because we had to board a bus at Taipei main station. Ms. Connie was waiting for us at the bus station and Weichen also joined us on our way to Kaoshiung. We left Taipei about 10 a .m and headed down south. It was very tiring and we had tough schedules when we started our voluntary work. At first I thought I could handle the schedules that most of the children carry. My first day at  was very exciting and the vice president asked me to him for jogging with him every morning and that is 5: 30 a .m. I jogged for atleast 3 days but the fourth day he was much busier so sometimes I went and sometimes I couldn’t.

In the beginning I was quite nervous because this was my first time to be dealing with kids and in general I know that kids are very active. So someone who deals with kids has to be patient and have that caring inside and knows how to convey the information wanted to be transferred from the volunteer to the kids. Kids are kids and they think a lot more different than adults or grownups do. But what touches me a lot is the way how the kids at the children’s home act and communicate with us. It is very heart-touching to be with them because I feel like I was in a big family and could really survive with them even though my Chinese was not fluent enough for them to understand what I tried to say. I felt like I was a part of their home because of being called big brother so this was what most touched me and I knew from the beginning that it would be tough  for me to leave the children’s home because I would miss them a lot.

There were five of us volunteers from National Chengchi University which were: Me,(Elio), Elise, Rebecca, Sylvia and Wendy. Wendy was originally responsible to be the leader of this small group from National Chengchi University and Sylvia was chosen to be vice- president. Before  leaving Taipei we did preparations and discussed about our schedule, reviewed and edited some mistakes we had and some activities we cannot be capable of teaching were taken out.

Our arrival at the children’s home was great. They greeted us and welcomed us with open hearts and treated us great. The first few days that followed were busy as we had to discuss with the vice- president apart from our nightly discussion between our group. So we had a tough schedule to keep on to.

Apart from other things I have learnt a lot from my past experience at the children’s home in Kaoshiung and now I know my weaknesses and my strengths so now I try to cover up my weaknesses. Compared to my experience in Kaoshiung  children’s home I think Pingtung children’s home Is a lot better. The children here are a lot calmer and they aren’t that noisy and active as those of Kaoshiung. What also helps us is the diversity of the volunteers we now have. For example Jean has been doing voluntary work recently so she knows how to lead us and also Ray is very dedicated and shows a lot of commitment so we all have to put in the equal amount of efforts required. Ray and Jean focuses more on leading and we are mostly responsible for the family units so this group is much stronger than the one we had at Kaoshiung. Back in Kaoshiung we were only five of us and the amount of children we were responsible for were quite a lot so we had this weakness. Now we hold different family units and each volunteer is responsible for approximately 4 or 5 children.

The kids here also don’t require that much strictness from the workers because they are a lot calmer although the workers are not that strict as those of Kaoshiung. So each home has different methods they use to control their kids so these different methods probably may be the easy way for us so we focus more on content of our programs rather than focusing more on how to get the kids attention.
