Reflection of being A volunteer at Pingtung children’s home

I am a freshman at National Chengchi University and this summer made a decision to be a volunteer on behalf of CCSA. The first length of the program we started to work with children at Kaoshiung county but later we moved in Pingtung at a place that flourished with greeneries.

Moving into Pingtung Children’s home gave me more hope of doing better because of the experience I had in Kaoshiung so I had more expectations of myself and had higher hopes. The first day we introduced ourselves to the children in Pingtung children’s home and it went quite well. The environment and the workers were much different as compared to the ones in Kaoshiung. I think each children’s home has their own method of getting along with children like organizations do they all have different cultures. A big and the most important thing is our communication channel with the children, the workers and the presidents.

First of all i think the group we have is much stronger and mixed compared to the one in Kaoshiung. From the boys side, there was me, Ray and Daniel so I had more backup from the boys side in whatever help I need and usually boys understand boys. And from the girls side there was Jean , Victoria , Cathy,Bunny, Elise, Rebecca and Sylvia. Jean was much more experienced and she really knew how to be a good leader so from the first day she demonstrated good leadership and showed great care and respect for each individual volunteer. In general a group should get along well and each one should have equal values and respect for each other and these existed in our group.  This group was bigger than the one in Kaoshiung so we spread the work and divided everyone for specific responsibilities. In kaoshiung we had a lot of pressures because there was only five of us and we had a lot of kids to take care of. The most important aspect of our group is that the leaders get along well with everyone and we had very good communication with each other. There was no specific person that the leader focuses on but instead focuses on everyone.

The mixed culture of our group also was a big contribution to our strength of performing good. For instance because of the experiences that Jean has we always have backup if there is rain. For outdoor activites like football, volleyball there was always some activity to replace these sports because we couldn’t play due to rainy conditions. So we divide into groups of two’s and take care of each group. So  we were quite relaxed at this place. Back at the other children’s home we were mostly responsible for all of the students whosoever the host is so this is much difficult and we had more help and was much easier for all of us in Pingtung.

The kids here in general are much calmer and they prefer to do everything you tell them to do. If a teacher says something that needs to be done then they immediately do it. We divided into the four families so Rebecca and I were responsible for one family which were the youngest boys. Victoria and Sylvia for another family,Bunny and Daniel for another and Cathy and Elise also for another. The kids I had were very active and they were always active and the most noisiest and most active place at this children’s home. At first the children were not familiar to us so we had to play some games with them for us to get familiar. Everyday we had almost the same schedule, only the sports changed a bit because of weather conditions. The days went by quickly and before we realized our voluntary work duration was coming to an end.
