As a European, more specifically a Belgian, guy Taiwan is far from home. the first things were I had to deal with was "throwing" away my usual European habits and start learning and copying the regular Asian way of live. For me, the most different thing in the beginning was the food, everything looked so strange and, I definitely had to learn how to eat with chopsticks! now, almost a month later, I have my own chopsticks and I'm becoming aware of more cultural different than in the beginning.

after being a couple of days in Taiwan , the first CCSA children home started. It was quiet exiting trip, this were I looked forward too, I was curious about everything that was going to happen. The thing I was wondering about the most was how to communicate with theme in a clear way. When I arrived in the children home, my first impression was that it was actually a huge place, with his own church, his own "restaurant" and a great playground. There was no complaining at all about the accommodation. But, after a while staying in the children home you start missing the society. It’s like the children home is an own community were everyone has his own roles and obligations, such as sweeping the floor, cleaning the table, taking care over the little children,...

It are those little things that make aware how a society is ordered, in my eyes it makes theme aware about how they can be a difference in the society. ...all those children are very curious about learning more from other cultures. Not only in learning some English words, strange dances or other habits, they also like to share and introduce there way of living and there habits. They’ve taught me some Chinese words, taught me something about Taiwan , Asian culture and, most imported for me, they’ve warned me for too spicy food!

When I was in the children home, I was not aware of all there backgrounds, to me they were all more like normal, usual children were I have spent a great time with. Only when the other team members told me about some possible backgrounds they could have I became aware of it. at that point you really enjoyed there laugh and the fact that they were having a great time, it’s not the activities that you do with the children who are the most important, but its more like sharing great times, moments, laughing or just give them some attention by playing basketball wit theme or play a cart game that make theme happy.

In the second children home the evolution of the children was more recognizable; in the beginning they were shyer. More difficult to get in touch with them. More difficult to reach them. But at the end the change of the children was clearer. They became more enthusiastic and were less shy then in the beginning.

In this children home there were more children, so it was difficult to reach theme all, not everyone likes practicing dances, cooking meals or singing. To try to interest them all, and to entertain them in an interesting way we made some trips outside of the children home, we went to a swimming pool with the youngest ones, a library and some little villages in the mountains. I think the children enjoyed those trips the most.

The children learn the most about other cultures just by being or playing together with them. In this children home we have done a cooking class, with a typical Belgian dish and a short presentation about Belgium . But I think the things they will remember the most about the whole project and about all the different cultures are the small things, like how we played together, how we communicated wit each other how we tried to learn things from them and vice versa.
